Darjeeling is famous for its first flush and second flush teas but in recent years they have been expanding and developing their processing techniques making some fine white teas, occasionally passable green tea and many oolongs that are hit or miss. We certainly found a hit here! This tea comes from Risheehat tea garden, which means “home of the holy sages” and dates back to the mid 1800s. In the 1950s it was purchased by Jay Shree, which is now the second largest tea producer in India, with dozens of organic and fair-trade tea gardens. This tea comes from the Liza Hill division on Risheehat.
It was made during the second flush harvest and you will find it unlike Chinese oolongs and unlike any other tea really with its closest proximity is to second flush Darjeeling. You will find it less astringent that a typical second flush tea and with a different set of aromatic notes that moves away from the fruity moscatel and moves to fall flavours like autumn leaves, apple cider and baked eggplant. Its flavour is still fruity but softer on the palate, with more herbal notes like oregano and basil and a light velvety finish.
