As many of you are aware, we normally don't offer famous Anxi Tie Guan Yin because it has suffered so much from its success that it's nearly impossible to find organic.
This, however, is another story! It is a very rare gem of an oolong which comes from Wild Tie Guan Yin varietal trees that grow among the Tulou villages, near Longyan. The Fujian Tulou villages are traditional Hakka communities built in circular or square shape and which date from as far back as the 12th century and are protected by Unesco. This area is about 200 kilometers east of Anxi, the home of Tie Guan Yin as most know it today.
This wild Tie Guan Yin wasn't rolled in balls as you typically find but hand-rolled and slightly twisted. They underwent a moderate oxidation and were then dry roasted over a wood fire. The infusion is elegant and smooth with a nice nutty aroma evoking hazelnut and in mouth it is a true pleasure to enjoy with a many nuanced flavor that is sweet and thick with warm nuttiness.
