Black tea (in China known as Hong Cha or “Red” tea
Very unique Yancha Hong Cha style tea made with leaves from Chin Shin cultivar leaves that come from natural gardens stewarded by aboriginal Taiwanese and processed by Pei Chun Lin. The tea was processed as a highly oxidized red tea (hong cha) but made in the Wu Yi Mountain Yancha oolong style with slow charcoal roasting. The resulting tea is very unique as it combines classic sweet red tea with more complex, ripe, fruity notes.

Very interesting and rare novel blend made by Mr. Kajihara in Kumamoto, Kyushu, the southern-most region of Japan. For this wakoucha tea he blended his already processed wonderful second harvest black tea from the wild Zairai cultivar with young shoots of the wild herb “Yomogi” or Artemisia Princeps, which gives the tea incredibly rich sweetness and a very pleasant herbal aroma. In Japan, Yomogi is traditionally used in folk medicine and is believed to improve infectious and inflammatory conditions. Handles many steepings!

In the West, Lapsang Souchong is a term that is generally associated with a powerful smoky tea. Lapsang Souchong (Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong) originated in the WuYi mountains and it is widely considered the very first black tea (or read tea is China). Traditionally it was not heavily smoked as a post-production step but carefully processed in a 4 story house (Qing Lou) with a pine fire on the ground floor lending a subtle and elegant smokiness.

Made from authentic wild and semi-wild Assam trees brought by Japanese to Sun Moon Lake before WWII! Seed propagated trees have space to grow and a symbiotic relationship with local ecology (plants, insects, animals, bacteria). Normally this would be considered a red tea (black in the west) but this tea is more like an oolong as they halved the withering/piling and rolling period, leaving the leaves greener and with more powerful Qi.
This particular batch was hand-rolled and made with leaves that were bitten by the same insect that makes Oriental Beauty so special. You will find this Assam Sun Moon Lake “Elevation” sweeter than previous batches because of this.
We recommend putting just a few leaves in a bowl and drinking as bowl tea. Handles multiple infusions!!!

Popular smoked black tea that was originally produced in the Fujian Wu Yi mountains like some of China’s best oolongs or “yancha” . This organic tea is traditionally made by withering and drying the leaves over a pine-wood fire to give it it’s characteristic smokey aroma and roasted taste. This tea can be enjoyed straight or with a couple of drops of milk.
