Da Hong Pao or “Big Red Robe” is the most famous oolong from the birthplace of oolong: Wuyi Mountain. Wuyi Mountain is called “Yancha”, which can be translated as Cliff Tea or Rock Tea. The terroir of the park itself is a major defining factor in terms of quality and tea that was harvested within the national park in called Zheng Yan.
We are ecstatic to offerthis authentic, Zheng Yan, Bei Dou Da Hong Pao! In reality the original Da Hong Pao are only 6 mother trees located in Jiu Long Keng. These trees are a national treasure, protected by guards and rarely harvested and when they are it is sold at astronomical sums. The closest we can get to real Da Hong Pao is Bei Dou Yi Hao or 1st Generation Bei Dou such as this one.
Bei Dou is a place in the park (Zheng Yan) where in the 1970s a farmer took cuttings from the mother trees, making these trees the direct descendents of the six mother trees. Bei Dou was selected as the site due to its similarity in terroir to Jiu Long Keng, where the mother trees are. Its lovely twisted brown leaves produce a deep copper-orange liquor. This is a traditional charcoal roasted tea that has been stored some time to lose some of its roast and bring out its warm roasted cocoa notes over a fruity, mineral backdrop.
Suffice to say, this is a unique, not to be missed, opportunity to discover this incredible tea that is quite different from the typical “Da Hong Pao” copies you typically find in the market.
